Divorces: the new trend emerging in the cypriot society

The rapid increase in divorces is the new trend dominating in the Cypriot society, which is neither different nor diverging from the new order emerging from all other countries both inside and outside the EU.

Divorce is the official way that State and the Church terminate a marriage between two individuals who, either jointly or not, proceed to the solution of their union.

The process for resolving religious marriages begins with the preparation of a letter sent to the Metropolis of the province where the parties reside. After the expiration of 3 months from the date that the Metropolis received the letter, the Applicant(s) may file an application before their District Court for the settlement of the marriage. However, if in the course of these three months the Metropolis invites the couple in a reconciliation attempt and this move does not turn out to be fruitful, only then the Applicant(s) may register earlier than 3 months a request to the Competent District Court, once the relevant attestation from the Metropolis has been granted.

As far as the ecclesiastical divorce is concerned, the process has been simplified compared to what it used to be in the past. Nowadays, once we receive the Court’s Marriage Solution from the Judge by completing the relevant form, the ecclesiastical divorce is issued as well.
